Walking Tour of Tantiusques – The Sturbridge Leadmine

About

This tour will be led by Ed Hood, Executive Director of the Norcross Wildlife Foundation, and an historian and archaeologist who led the excavations at the nearby Robert Crowd site, home for one of the miners who worked at the Leadmine.  mine was the source of very high-quality graphite which Native Americans used and traded across the region and which early European settlers first attempted to mine in the 1640s. The walking tour will discuss this history and look at some of the remains of mining done in the mid-1800s when the mine was at its peak of production. The tour will then follow the Trustees of Reservations hiking trail around the site and out to the Robert Crowd archaeological site where the lives of miners and other residents of the site will be discussed. The tour will last about 1 hour and cover about a mile of trail, some of which is rough and steep.

The tour will start at the information kiosk for the Tantiusques Reservation, 493 Leadmine Road, Sturbridge. Registration preferred, please contact sgibquig@gmail.com
