A Sturbridge Winter Wonderland

January 15, 2024

If you’re considering a chilly winter getaway, the quaint town of Sturbridge is the place for you! From snow-dusted trails to cozy indoor escapes, Sturbridge is a winter enthusiast’s dream.

Outdoor Adventure

Sturbridge boasts over 30 miles of walking trails that are perfect for a brisk winter hike. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes and relish the crunch of fresh snow underfoot. Explore places like Westville Lake, Opacum Woods and Trails and Wells State Park for a day of winter hiking, snowshoeing, or cross-country skiing.

If adrenaline-pumping winter sports are more your style, head to nearby Shrewsbury and check out Ski Ward Ski Area. Catering to both seasoned skiers and beginners, this spot promises a thrilling day on the slopes.

Ice Skating

For a classic winter activity, lace up your skates and hit the ice. If you have your own skates, you can have some fun at the Sturbridge Town Common Rink. If you need to rent, head over to Worcester and check out the Worcester Common Oval. This 12,000-square-foot ice rink is 4,000 square feet larger than the rink at Rockefeller Center! The rink features piped-in music, skate rentals, concessions and more.

Old Sturbridge Village

Step back in time at Old Sturbridge Village, New England’s largest outdoor museum. During winter, the village is transformed into a picturesque winter scene straight out of a storybook. Be sure to check out their ‘Evening of Illumination’ event, where the village is bathed only in the warm glow of candles, oil lamps, and firelight.

Indoor Fun

If you prefer to escape the cold, we’ve got you covered there too. Sturbridge and the surrounding towns have plenty of fun indoor activities to keep you entertained when it’s just too cold to be outside. You can test your puzzle-solving skills at Escape the Pike, explore the vast collection of the Worcester Art Museum, or unleash your creativity at Brush it Off. Plus, you can spend your evenings cozied up at one of Sturbridge’s amazing restaurants, and start your mornings at one of our cozy coffee shops.

Don’t let cabin fever get to you this winter, plan a getaway and experience all the cold-weather charm that the heart of Massachusetts has to offer.
