Fall in Love with Sturbridge: 10 Must-Do Activities This Autumn

September 9, 2026

There is a specific moment in New England when the heavy, humid air of summer finally breaks and is replaced by crisp orchard air, the scent of woodsmoke from a hearth and the promise of flannel weather. As the Sugar Maples, Red Maples, and Northern Red Oaks begin their show-stopping transformation into vibrant shades of crimson and gold, Sturbridge becomes more than just a getaway; it becomes a picture-perfect postcard. Whether you’re here for the historic charm of Old Sturbridge Village or the seasonal flavors found at orchards, autumn in Sturbridge is an experience you have to feel to believe.

We invite you to come experience Sturbridge in 2026 and all it has to offer this fall. Here are 10 must-do activities to help you fall in love with the season in our favorite corner of Massachusetts.

#1 – Step Back in Time at Old Sturbridge Village

Old Sturbridge Village(opens in new tab) is the largest outdoor living history museum in the Northeast, bringing 1830s New England to life across 200+ acres. In autumn, the historical buildings, covered bridges, and old dirt roads are framed by stunning red and gold foliage, making it even more magical.

With this year marking America’s 250th anniversary, it is an ideal time to visit and enjoy the special events and attractions. On Saturday, September 5, 2026, Old Sturbridge Village will host Muster Day(opens in new tab), which is an annual living history event that recreates an early 19th-century New England militia training day, where town militias required able-bodied men (typically ages 18 to 45) to gather once or twice a year to inspect arms, practice military maneuvers, and ensure community defense readiness.

On Saturday, September 19th and Sunday, September 20th, the “By Hands and Harvest(opens in new tab)” event will feature a working cider mill, farm animals, an opportunity to learn about domestic manufacture of historic items, taste fresh heirloom apples, and enjoy farm-themed games for children of all ages!

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, Old Sturbridge Village will celebrate the Revolutionary Gala,(opens in new tab) an exquisite evening where history and elegance meet beneath the stars, the culmination of a year-long celebration of America 250(opens in new tab). Proceeds from the 2026 Revolutionary Gala will benefit Living History Education, an initiative dedicated to honoring the 50th anniversary of our Museum Education building and the immersive history experiences it offers. While there is a waiting list for the Gala, you can add your name or donate to the initiative.

#2 – Apple Picking at Hyland Orchard

There is no autumn tradition quite as synonymous with New England as heading into the apple orchard on a crisp, cool autumn day. As the leaves start their annual “show” and the air turns sharp and sweet with the scent of ripening fruit, orchards beckon families to enjoy the day among the trees, on hayrides and out in nature.

Hyland Orchards(opens in new tab) at 199 Arnold Road in Fiskdale (within Sturbridge) offers the quintessential New England experience that perfectly captures the slow, savory transition into the fall season. Spend the day picking your own fruits, visiting with the farm animals, hopping on a hayride or listening to live music. Bring a picnic and your family and friends for a full day of fun.

#3 – The Annual Harvest Festival

The Sturbridge Harvest Festival is one of Central Massachusetts’ most beloved autumn traditions, celebrating local artisans, fall flavors, and community spirit right on the picturesque Sturbridge Town Common and the grounds of the Publick House Historic Inn.

Typically held in mid-October after the long weekend, the festival highlights local crafters, artisans and food vendors, who set up booths along the Common. With live music, farm-fresh produce and family entertainment like a Scarecrow Contest and kids’ games, it is a must-visit in Sturbridge annually.

This year, the event is being held from October 17 to 18, giving families lots of opportunities for community gathering. This event is hosted by Deep Roots Distillery USA.

Altruist Brewing Co.

#4 – Cider Tastings and Brew Hopping

For some, autumn evokes thoughts of foliage and farms, while others think of the new ciders and fall flavors offered at local breweries. Central Massachusetts has a booming craft beverage scene that provides the fall flavors and relaxing vibe we all need.

Gather with friends and sip seasonal ales and farm-to-glass brews at some of Sturbridge’s favorite spots. Altruist Brewing Company(opens in new tab) is nestled in a 160+ year-old mill building right on the Quinebaug River, offering scenic views and world-class pours. The newly opened Deep Roots Distillery USA(opens in new tab) offers mash-to-bottle spirits that use local honey, maple sugar and other locally grown items in their all-natural products.
