Sturbridge Historical Society March Program: “History Beneath Our Feet”

About

Discover the fascinating stories etched in stone at the Sturbridge Historical Society’s March Program, “History Beneath Our Feet” on Thursday, March 27. Visit the Publick House for an enlightening evening as Wally Hersee, founder of the Sturbridge Gravestone Keepers, shares insights from his remarkable project to clean and preserve the gravestones of the Sturbridge North Cemetery.

Explore the rich history of the North Cemetery, established in the 1840s, and learn how preservation efforts have uncovered the forgotten lives and legacies of those memorialized there. Hersee will reveal stories of notable individuals, share techniques used to clean and maintain the gravestones and discuss the importance of recording these historical markers to aid genealogists and historians.

Of special interest are the cemetery’s high Victorian designs and the unique section honoring Civil War veterans, featuring uniform gravestones erected by the local Grand Army of the Republic.

This program is free and open to the public, making it the perfect opportunity for history lovers and the local community to connect and uncover the “history beneath our feet.” Don’t miss this captivating presentation about preserving our shared heritage.
