SUMMARY:World Building Book Group: The Long Way to a Small\, Angry Planet
DESCRIPTION:The World Building Book Group will discuss science fiction\, fantasy\, and other speculative fiction titles that provide rich\, layered imaginary worlds populated with diverse forms of life. Selected titles will encourage readers to explore different possibilities and spark curiosity about the world around them. No registration required. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space—and one adventurous young explorer who discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe—in this light-hearted debut space opera from a rising sci-fi star. \nRosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days\, it offers her a bed\, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy\, and most importantly\, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself\, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew\, including Sissix\, the exotic reptilian pilot\, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks who keep the ship running\, and Ashby\, their noble captain.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Group: Jacqueline in Paris
DESCRIPTION:This season’s theme is “Exploring the Importance of Place”. Join us for a discussion of Jacqueline in Paris by Ann Mah. Copies can be picked up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: In September 1949 Jacqueline Bouvier arrives in postwar Paris to begin her junior year abroad. She’s twenty years old\, socially poised but financially precarious\, and all too aware of her mother’s expectations that she make a brilliant match. Before relenting to family pressure\, she has one year to herself far away from sleepy Vassar College and the rigid social circles of New York\, a year to explore and absorb the luminous beauty of the City of Light. Jacqueline is immediately catapulted into an intoxicating new world of champagne and châteaux\, art and avant-garde theater\, cafés and jazz clubs. She strikes up a romance with a talented young writer who shares her love of literature and passion for culture – even though her mother would think him most unsuitable. \nBut beneath the glitter and rush\, France is a fragile place still haunted by the Occupation. Jacqueline lives in a rambling apartment with a widowed countess and her daughters\, all of whom suffered as part of the French Resistance just a few years before. In the aftermath of World War II\, Paris has become a nest of spies\, and suspicion\, deception\, and betrayal lurk around every corner. Jacqueline is stunned to watch the rise of communism – anathema in America\, but an active movement in France – never guessing she is witnessing the beginning of the political environment that will shape the rest of her life—and that of her future husband. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:The Hunt for the X-15 Rocket Plane
DESCRIPTION:From 1959 to 1968\, NASA operated three North American Aviation rocket planes to great effect. In 199 flights they generated over 700 technical papers on aerodynamics and set altitude and speed records for winged vehicles not exceeded until the space shuttle many years later. In 1993\, our presenter\, David Ball\, organized a search in the Mojave Desert for parts from X-15 #3 which came apart in flight in 1967. Join us on ZOOM as he shares what made the X-15 the greatest research plane ever built and his theory on why one was lost. Led by David S. Ball\, a volunteer educator with NASA. As a Solar System Ambassador with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, he presents topics related to American activities in space. \nSponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Library.

SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Group: The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes. Copies can be picked up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve\, hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic\, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library\, Alice signs on enthusiastically. \nThe leader\, and soon Alice’s greatest ally\, is Margery\, a smart-talking\, self-sufficient woman who’s never asked a man’s permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky. \nWhat happens to them–and to the men they love–becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty\, justice\, humanity\, and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful\, at others brutal\, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any\, arming them with facts that will change their lives. \nBased on a true story rooted in America’s past\, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny\, heartbreaking\, enthralling\, it is destined to become a modern classic–a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship\, of true love\, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond. SUMMARY:Armchair Travelers Take to the Open Road: The Library of Legends by Janie Chang
DESCRIPTION:Join the Armchair Travelers Book Group as they Take to the Open Road! No registration is necessary\, just drop-in! Copies of The Library of Legends by Janie Chang are available to pick up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: China\, 1937: When Japanese bombs begin falling on the city of Nanking\, nineteen-year-old Hu Lian and her classmates at Minghua University are ordered to flee. Lian and a convoy of more than a hundred students\, faculty\, and staff must walk a thousand miles to the safety of China’s western provinces\, a journey marred by hunger\, cold\, and the constant threat of aerial attack. And it is not just the student refugees who are at risk: Lian and her classmates have been entrusted with a priceless treasure\, a 500-year-old collection of myths and folklore known as the Library of Legends. \nHer family’s past has made Lian wary of forming attachments\, but the students’ common duty to safeguard the Library of Legends forms unexpected bonds. Lian finds friendship and a cautious romance with the handsome and wealthy Liu Shaoming. But after one classmate is murdered and another arrested\, Lian realizes she must escape from the convoy before a family secret puts her in danger. Accompanied by Shao and the enigmatic maidservant Sparrow\, Lian makes her way to Shanghai\, hoping to reunite with her mother. \nOn the journey\, Lian learns of the connection between her two companions and a tale from the Library of Legends\, The Willow Star and the Prince. Learning Shao and Sparrow’s true identities compels Lian to confront her feelings for Shao. But there are broader consequences too\, for as the ancient books travel across China\, they awaken immortals and guardian spirits to embark on an exodus of their own\, one that changes the country’s fate forever. \nBased on true events\, rich in Chinese history and lore\, The Library of Legends is both an illuminating exploration of China’s recent past and an evocative tale of love\, sacrifice\, and the extraordinary power of storytelling. SUMMARY:Armchair Travelers Take to the Open Road: Travels with George by Nathaniel Philbrick
DESCRIPTION:Join the Armchair Travelers Book Group as they Take to the Open Road! No registration is necessary\, just drop-in! Copies of Travels with George: In Search of Washington and His Legacy by Nathaniel Philbrick are available to pick up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: When George Washington became president in 1789\, the United States of America was still a loose and quarrelsome confederation and a tentative political experiment. Washington undertook a tour of the ex-colonies to talk to ordinary citizens about his new government\, and to imbue in them the idea of being one thing—Americans. \nIn the fall of 2018\, Nathaniel Philbrick embarked on his own journey into what Washington called “the infant woody country” to see for himself what America had become in the 229 years since. Writing in a thoughtful first person about his own adventures with his wife\, Melissa\, and their dog\, Dora\, Philbrick follows Washington’s presidential excursions: from Mount Vernon to the new capital in New York; a monthlong tour of Connecticut\, Massachusetts\, New Hampshire\, and Rhode Island; a venture onto Long Island and eventually across Georgia\, South Carolina\, and North Carolina. The narrative moves smoothly between the eighteenth and twenty-first centuries as we see the country through both Washington’s and Philbrick’s eyes. \nWritten at a moment when America’s founding figures are under increasing scrutiny\, Travels with George grapples bluntly and honestly with Washington’s legacy as a man of the people\, a reluctant president\, and a plantation owner who held people in slavery. At historic houses and landmarks\, Philbrick reports on the reinterpretations at work as he meets reenactors\, tour guides\, and other keepers of history’s flame. He paints a picture of eighteenth-century America as divided and fraught as it is today\, and he comes to understand how Washington compelled\, enticed\, stood up to\, and listened to the many different people he met along the way—and how his all-consuming belief in the union helped to forge a nation. SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Group: The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis. Copies can be picked up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: It’s 1913\, and on the surface\, Laura Lyons couldn’t ask for more out of life—her husband is the superintendent of the New York Public Library\, allowing their family to live in an apartment within the grand building\, and they are blessed with two children. But headstrong\, passionate Laura wants more\, and when she takes a leap of faith and applies to the Columbia Journalism School\, her world is cracked wide open. As her studies take her all over the city\, she is drawn to Greenwich Village’s new bohemia\, where she discovers the Heterodoxy Club—a radical\, all-female group in which women are encouraged to loudly share their opinions on suffrage\, birth control\, and women’s rights. Soon\, Laura finds herself questioning her traditional role as wife and mother. And when valuable books are stolen back at the library\, threatening the home and institution she loves\, she’s forced to confront her shifting priorities head on . . . and may just lose everything in the process. \nEighty years later\, in 1993\, Sadie Donovan struggles with the legacy of her grandmother\, the famous essayist Laura Lyons\, especially after she’s wrangled her dream job as a curator at the New York Public Library. But the job quickly becomes a nightmare when rare manuscripts\, notes\, and books for the exhibit Sadie’s running begin disappearing from the library’s famous Berg Collection. Determined to save both the exhibit and her career\, the typically risk-averse Sadie teams up with a private security expert to uncover the culprit. However\, things unexpectedly become personal when the investigation leads Sadie to some unwelcome truths about her own family heritage—truths that shed new light on the biggest tragedy in the library’s history. SUMMARY:Armchair Travelers Take to the Open Road: The Map of Lost Memories by Kim Fay
DESCRIPTION:Join the Armchair Travelers Book Group as they Take to the Open Road! No registration is necessary\, just drop-in! Copies of The Map of Lost Memories by Kim Fay are available to pick up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: In 1925 the international treasure-hunting scene is a man’s world\, and no one understands this better than Irene Blum\, who is passed over for a coveted museum curatorship because she is a woman. Seeking to restore her reputation\, she sets off from Seattle in search of a temple believed to house the lost history of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer civilization. But her quest to make the greatest archaeological discovery of the century soon becomes a quest for her family’s secrets. Embracing the colorful and corrupt world of colonial Asia in the early 1900s\, The Map of Lost Memories takes readers into a forgotten era where nothing is as it seems.  As Irene travels through Shanghai’s lawless back streets and Saigon’s opium-filled lanes\, she joins forces with a Communist temple robber and an intriguing nightclub owner with a complicated past. Deep within the humidity-soaked Cambodian jungle\, what they bring to light does more than change history. It ultimately solves the mysteries of their own lives. (Amazon)

SUMMARY:Afternoon Book Group: Painting the Light by Sally Cabot Gunning
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of Painting the Light by Sally Cabot Gunning. Copies can be picked up at the library. Sponsored by the Friends of the JHPL. \nAbout the book: Martha’s Vineyard\, 1898. In her first life\, Ida Russell had been a painter. Five years ago\, she had confidently walked the halls of Boston’s renowned Museum School\, enrolling in art courses that were once deemed “unthinkable” for women to take\, and showing a budding talent for watercolors. But no more. Ida Russell is now Ida Pease\, resident of a seaside farm on Vineyard Haven\, and wife to Ezra\, a once-charming man who has become an inattentive and altogether unreliable husband. Ezra runs a salvage company in town with his business partner\, Mose Barstow\, but he much prefers their nightly card games at the local pub to his work in their Boston office\, not to mention filling haystacks and tending sheep on the farm at home—duties that have fallen to Ida and their part-time farmhand\, Lem. Ida\, meanwhile\, has left her love for painting behind. \nIt comes as no surprise to Ida when Ezra is hours late for a Thanksgiving dinner\, only to leave abruptly for another supposedly urgent business trip to Boston. But then something unthinkable happens: a storm strikes and the ship carrying Ezra and Mose sinks. \nIn the wake of this shocking tragedy\, Ida must settle the affairs of Ezra’s estate\, a task that brings her to a familiar face from her past—Henry Barstow\, Mose’s brother and executor. As she joins Henry in sifting through the remnants of her husband’s life and work\, Ida must learn to separate truth from lies and what matters from what doesn’t. \nCaptured in rich\, painterly prose—piercing as a coastal gale and shimmering as sunlight on the waves—Painting the Light is an arresting portrait of a woman\, and a considered meditation on grief\, persistence\, and reinvention. (Amazon)
