DESCRIPTION:The Rotary Club of Sturbridge has announced that its popular TREK Sturbridge Halloween 5K\, 1K and Fun Walk will return on Sunday\, October 30\, 2022\, according to club president and race director Klaus Hachfeld. \nThe family-friendly event includes a couple of timed races and other activities\, including a timed 5K Trail Run\, a 5K Trail Fun Walk on the same 5K trail\, with an official start time of 10 a.m. A timed 1K Road Race for pre-teens (12 years & under) will start at 9:30 a.m. and finish at the same location as the 5K Race\, but it will be a road race\, making it accessible to persons with a disability. \nThese activities will again be held at the Old Sturbridge Village Education Center on Old Sturbridge Village Road and will use the well-groomed Arbutus Park Trail in the Leadmine Mountain Conservation Lands for the 5K Race and Fun Walk. Parking will be available in the Education Center lot.  Pre-registration is now available on the RaceWire website at https://racewire.com/register.php?id=13070 \nOn-site registration will also be available starting at 8 a.m. The first 25 1K racers and the first 150 5K racers to register will get a free TREK Sturbridge Halloween 5K & Fun Walk tee-shirt. Free organized games for younger children\, a costume parade\, and relay races will begin at 9 AM at the Education Center. No pre-registration is required for these activities. \nThe Trek Sturbridge Halloween 5K and Fun Walk is a Sturbridge Rotary Club fundraiser\, with all profits going to local student scholarships and other community needs projects. SUMMARY:Exploring Sturbridge's Old Burial Ground
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 27 the Sturbridge Historical Society will  present a program about the Town’s Old Burial Ground\, located just off the Common next to the Central Office Building. Local resident Bill Barnsley will share his work documenting and mapping the Old Burial Ground. He  will provide a brief background on cemeteries and gravestones\, as well as sources for searching graves and ancestors. He will discuss some of the Sturbridge people and families buried here\, sharing the stories he uncovered during his research. “This isn’t just rock and stone\, it’s people’s lives” notes Bill. The Old Burial Ground served the Town’s needs from approximately 1740 to the last burial in 1894. \nBill Barnsley has been a Sturbridge resident since 2013 when he moved from San Diego to take care of his elderly parents. He is a certified Merry Gentleman (known as Santa Claus) and the CEO of a well-known worldwide\, overnight toy delivery service\, He also has a small “side hustle” as a genealogist. This led him to begin researching the Sturbridge Old Burial Ground. In time he was ably assisted by Jude McDonald\, a Sturbridge librarian for 25 years (now also known as Mrs. Claus). \nThis program is held at the Publick House at 7:00 PM\, and is open to the public free of charge. \n
