SUMMARY:Victory Gardens: Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time and explore the rich history and lasting impact of Victory Gardens in this engaging presentation hosted by the Sturbridge Historical Society and the Southbridge Garden Club. Led by Debra Dellanina-Alvarez of Saved by the Garden\, the program delves into life during World War I and World War II\, highlighting how communities came together through gardening efforts and the valuable knowledge shared among volunteers. Attendees will gain insight into what was grown\, how it was cultivated\, and how those practices continue to influence gardening today. \nThe presentation also features a virtual visit to the oldest Victory Garden in the United States\, examining its historical significance and modern relevance. Along the way\, participants will explore a variety of garden plots\, uncovering unique architectural elements\, fascinating plant histories\, and lesser-known details that bring these spaces to life. \nDebra Dellanina-Alvarez brings a diverse background as a lifelong gardener\, healthcare provider\, program designer\, and speaker. With a passion for nature\, history\, architecture\, and science\, she has worked as an architectural and history guide with Boston by Foot and designed immersive walking tours\, including her seasonal Art\, Architecture and Gardens experience. Her time as a teacher naturalist at Massachusetts Audubon’s Drumlin Farm further reflects her dedication to environmental education. In 2019\, she founded Saved by the Garden\, where she continues to develop engaging programs that highlight significant garden spaces and their unique features. \nThis program offers a thoughtful look at an important chapter in American history through the lens of gardening and community. Open to the public\, the event is graciously hosted by the Publick House.
